Cesarean Delivery : Also referred to as a “C-Section”.A Cesarean Delivery is a surgical procedure in which a fetus is delivered through an incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. According to the CDC, in 2010, almost 33% of births were by cesarean delivery.

Epidural: Anesthetic introduced into the space around the dura mater of the spinal cord; used especially in childbirth to produce loss of sensation below the waist.

Labor Augmentation : An intervention that is intended to increase the intensity of labor, usually when the caregiver feels the labor is not ‘progressing’, or is progressing too slowly. Augmentation of labor differs from induction, in that the labor has already started in some way, but is not progressing, has slowed or stopped. This can also include interventions to stimulate contractions after the waters have broken on their own

Pitocin : Artificial Oxytocin used to bring on or strengthen labor contractions during childbirth. Also used to control bleeding after childbirth.

Prodromal Labor : When the uterus contracts somewhat frequently, may be strong or mild, contractions usually aren’t occurring with regular intervals, but can keep a woman on alert, can keep a woman awake, and certainly can keep everyone wondering when active labor will establish.
